Google unlimited Drive

Google Drive is already one of the best cloud storage services around, and this week it got even better—if you’re a student. In an effort to ramp up its commitment to education, the search giant is offering both educators and students unlimited Drive storage at no cost. When you’re a student, there’s nothing better than free.

The initiative, known as Drive for Education, is similar in execution to Drive for Work, only users don’t have to pay a cent. Google is calling this week’s announcement an “ultra-secure and entirely free book bag for the 21st century.” As you’d imagine, the new incentive is also likely Google’s subtle way of encouraging folks to use the company’s Chromebooks, which are becoming more powerful by the day.

In addition to unlimited storage—which, by the way, can support files as big as 5TB in size—Drive for Education will also offer Google Apps Vault, and “world-class security.” For teachers, Google gently pointed to Classroom, a new classroom tool designed to help teachers create and organize assignments.

You’ll need an active .edu email address to get the free offer though, as Gizmodo noted, your school will actually need to be signed up for Apps for Education. That might limit availability from the start, but seeing as Apps for Education is free to educational institutions, the incentive to sign up is high now that Google is offering unlimited storage at no extra cost. The offer is set to roll out in the coming weeks.
